Pune Airport’s New Terminal to Begin Operations on July 14
The highly anticipated new terminal at Pune International Airport is set to commence operations on Sunday, July 14, 2024. This major infrastructure upgrade is expected to improve connectivity and reduce congestion at the airport.
Inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in March, the New Integrated Terminal Building (NITB) represents a INR 423 crore investment and covers 51,595 square meters. The launch was initially delayed due to a shortage of Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) personnel. However, a recent intervention by Minister of State for Civil Aviation and Pune MP Murlidhar Mohol, who secured an additional 222 CISF staff from Union Home Minister Amit Shah, has paved the way for the terminal’s opening.
Originally slated for earlier this year, the terminal’s debut was postponed due to staffing issues. With the additional CISF personnel now in place, operations can proceed as planned.
The new terminal significantly expands capacity, allowing Pune International Airport to handle up to 16 million passengers annually, addressing the region’s growing air travel demand. On the opening day, Air India and Air India Express will start operations from the new facility, with Air India Flight AI-858 to Delhi and Air India Express Flight I5 320 to Bhubaneswar being the inaugural departures. Pune Airport Director Santosh Dhoke has announced that all airlines are expected to transition to the new terminal by August 5.
