Pune Metro – Expansion Plans Approved For Two Key Routes
The Maharashtra state government has approved the expansion of the Pune Metro, a decision set to greatly improve public transportation in the burgeoning city. This expansion initiative includes extending the existing Vanaz to Ramwadi line at both ends.
New Stations and Connectivity:
The project includes two main extensions:
Vanaz to Chandni Chowk: The new 1.12-kilometre elevated route will introduce two additional stations – Kothrud Bus Depot and Chandni Chowk. This inclusion aims to serve the nearby residents and businesses, enhancing overall accessibility in the area.
Ramwadi to Wagholi: This ambitious 11.63-kilometre stretch, entirely elevated, will feature 11 fresh stations. Among these stations are Viman Nagar, Somnath Nagar, Kharadi Bypass, Tulaja Bhavani, Ubale Nagar, Upper Kharadi Road, Wagheshwar Temple, Wagholi, Siddharth Nagar, Bakori Phata, and Vitthalwadi. This expansion focuses on areas densely populated with IT firms, educational establishments, and financial institutions along the Ramwadi to Wagholi corridor, with the ultimate goal of easing traffic congestion along the bustling Nagar Road.
Project Funding and Timeline:
The project is anticipated to cost INR 3,756 crore in total. Financing will be sourced from various channels, comprising allocations from both the central and state governments, alongside loans obtained from bilateral and multilateral organizations. Additionally, the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) will extend financial aid and allocate land for the project.
The significance of timely completion has been underscored by the state government. To accelerate the process, MahaMetro, the executing body, has been empowered to procure supplementary funding through loans as necessary. Furthermore, governmental and semi-governmental entities are anticipated to collaborate by providing temporary access to open areas during the construction phase.
Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar has emphasized that the project’s impact will extend beyond mere transportation enhancement. He anticipates the new metro lines will:
- Mitigate traffic congestion: By offering a convenient and environmentally friendly alternative to private vehicles, the metro is projected to substantially alleviate congestion on crowded roads.
- Stimulate industrial development: Enhanced connectivity is foreseen to foster the city’s industrial expansion.
- Foster sustainable urban mobility: The expansion is in line with the city’s aspiration for a more sustainable and eco-friendly transportation network.
Approval from the Central Government and Project Schedule
Having obtained approval at the state level, the proposal will now progress to the central government for ultimate endorsement. The procedure will entail deliberations among inter-ministerial groups, an assessment by the Public Investment Board (PIB), and ultimately, approval from the central cabinet. Though a precise timeline is yet to be determined, officials expect potential delays owing to the forthcoming elections.
This expansion initiative represents a notable advancement for Pune’s public transportation infrastructure. With the inclusion of additional routes, stations, and enhanced connectivity, the Pune Metro is positioned to be a crucial element in fostering a more efficient, sustainable, and interconnected future for the city. Furthermore, the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has submitted the detailed project report for phase two of the Pune metro rail to the state government for review and approval.
