Mumbai – Ahmedabad Bullet Train – Information, Route Map, Ticket & Updates

Project Overview

The Mumbai – Ahmedabad High-Speed Rail (MAHSR Bullet Train) project, currently under construction, encompasses a 508.17 km High-Speed Rail line linking Mumbai, Maharashtra, and Ahmedabad, Gujarat, via 12 stations. This ambitious endeavor is estimated to cost around INR 1.1 lakh crore (USD 15 billion).

Under the auspices of the G7 Partnership for Global Infrastructure and Investment, the Mumbai-Ahmedabad High-Speed Railway Corridor project is advancing in India. Drawing inspiration from Japan’s Shinkansen bullet train technology, this initiative aspires to emulate the transformative success of the Delhi Metro, which has significantly impacted society and industry.

Managed by the National High-Speed Rail Corporation Ltd. (NHSRCL), the project is being financed through a 50-year INR 88,087 crore (USD 12 billion) loan from Japan, carrying an interest rate of 0.1%. Repayments are slated to commence 15 years after the line becomes operational.

Leveraging rolling stock modeled after Japan’s Shinkansen’s E5 series, capable of speeds up to 320 km/h, the new train will dramatically slash travel time between Mumbai and Ahmedabad from six hours to just two. It is anticipated that over 60% of air travelers currently utilizing this route will migrate to the bullet train, enticed by its ability to embark and disembark en route, along with seamless connectivity to other modes of transportation.

The trains on this line will traverse at a speed of 320 km/h, primarily on an elevated viaduct situated 10-15m above the ground, except in Mumbai, where the line will be subterranean, employing three mega Tunnel Boring Machines (TBM). Notably, the line will also pass beneath the sea at Thane Creek for approximately 2 km between Mumbai and Thane stations.

The foundation stone for this ambitious project was laid by the Prime Ministers of India and Japan on September 14, 2017. Initially set for completion by August 15, 2022, challenges related to land acquisition impeded progress; however, the project has now achieved 100% land acquisition.

Infrastructure Boost

The designated Thane station along the bullet train corridor is situated in Dombivli E, just 1-2 kilometers from Dombivli station. Upon its operation, a bustling ecosystem is expected to emerge around the station. This will include the establishment of shops, retail outlets, and commercial spaces to cater to the needs of commuters. Additionally, road development, aligned with the city’s development plan, will be fast-tracked to enhance connectivity to the station from the surrounding areas.

Already, a comprehensive network of roads has been proposed as part of the development plan. The presence of the bullet train corridor will serve as a catalyst for expediting the development of these roads. It will offer residents of nearby areas significant benefits in terms of improved connectivity and appreciation of property value.

Impact of Bullet Train on Real Estate Sector

The high-speed rail link between two bustling metropolises will significantly influence the demand for housing, retail, and commercial properties in various ways. As the project progresses, substantial real estate development is swiftly occurring in areas such as Dombivli, Thane, and Kalyan. With this project set to greatly enhance connectivity, adjacent locations are poised to experience rapid development, leading to a notable surge in real estate values.
