About Pune Metro

Pune Metro, an urban Mass Rapid Transit System (MRTS), is being constructed in Pune, Maharashtra, by Maharashtra Metro Rail Corporation Limited (Maha-Metro) and Pune Metropolitan Region Development Authority (PMRDA). The Detailed Project Report (DPR) for the 31.254 km Pune Metro Phase 1 project, comprising two metro lines and 29 stations, was initially prepared and submitted by the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation in July 2009. It underwent revisions in January 2013, August 2014, and November 2015 to reflect current prices.
Despite State Government approval in 2012, the project faced obstacles, including red tape, politics, and opposition from local NGOs and activists due to its predominantly elevated nature. The project received final approval from the Union Government’s Cabinet on December 7, 2016. Commercial operations on two sections of Phase 1 were inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on March 6, 2022.
Furthermore, the Pune Metropolitan Region Development Authority is developing a third line, mostly elevated, connecting Hinjewadi to Civil Court through a public–private partnership (PPP) model. This initiative is being executed by a consortium of TRIL Urban Transport Private Limited (a Tata Group Company) and Siemens Project Ventures GmbH (a subsidiary of Siemens Financial Services).
While the detailed project report (DPR) for Pune Metro Phase 2 has not been prepared yet, it is anticipated to include new corridors and extensions of existing metro lines to Katraj, Chandni Chowk, Kharadi, Hadapsar, Loni Kalbhor, Katraj, Khadakwasla, and Warje.
